The scene depicted here is a well-known historical scene from Japanese history. In the 14th-century Taiheiki chronicle, when Emperor Godaigo was exiled in 1332, the samurai Kojima Takanori visited an inn frequented by the emperor and wrote a poem on a cherry tree in an attempt to express his unwavering loyalty to him.
