Very rare Maedate (Kabuto helmet ornament) representing a Japanese Oni-Shigami demon head.
Edo period.
Urushi lacquered wood with gilding and inlays of animal hair and what appear to be plant strands.
The horns are removable to facilitate transport in a box during the trips that the samurai could make, and secured by small bamboo pins located at the back of the maedate.
Excellent quality of manufacture and the state of conservation is remarkable.
The fixing hole is of the « female » type and is approximately 1 x 0.5 cm in size.
